The Royal William Yard is the heart of Plymouth’s historic naval quarter. Built in the early 1800’s, the stunning architecture covers a wide area of the Cremill point shoreline. In recent years, the number of high-quality eating establishments and trendy bars have increased, bringing with them the cultural side of the ‘Ocean Cities’ population. The Royal William Yard is also a cultural and commercial centre for many of Plymouth’s more progressive residents.

What to expect at the Royal William Yard

Many of the grade 1 and 2 listed buildings are now home to high-end apartments and flats. At the weekends, you will find trendy 30 something’s enjoying al fresco gin bars, funky house sessions and sunset sessions alongside the more formal restaurant crowd. The whole feel is one of progression and cultural development.

There are regular events, including out-door theatre productions, open-air cinema, spoken word, arts and crafts markets, and Wimbledon on the big screen. It is easy to see why people enjoy working here.

The launch of Community Interest Company Ocean Studios has allowed 100 artists in residence, to find a space to create. Photography, ceramics, poetry and art all thrive within the walls of this community. Where once the Yard provided the victuals for the countries navy, she now feeds the creativity of a developing city.

With lots of physical activities to do, such as stand-up paddle boarding and sailing, the Yard has activities for everyone. When you have worked up an appetite, there are around eight restaurants including; Wildwood, Seco Lounge, Bistrot Pierre, The Hutong, and many more.

Built in 1825, once occupied by Navy Officers, and is viewed as one of the Yards finer, more elegant buildings.
